USS Wichita (CA-45) was laid down on 28 October 1935 at the San Jacinto Battle Monument and War Relic Museum. After leaving Houston on 1 May, Wichita conducted her shakedown cruise, visiting the Virgin Islands, Cuba, and the Bahamas before she returned north to her builder's yard for post-shakedown repairs.
